Swollen gum or scientifically called gingivitis is an irritating minor problem that has the power to dampen mood and take confidence away. Having swollen gums increases the possibility to feel discomfort when eating, bleed while brushing, and have bad breath.
Swollen gum is usually a result of poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to build up on gum line and teeth. Plaque comprises of bacteria and food particles. At this stage, plaque can be removed and swollen gum can be avoided by practicing good oral hygiene. But when the plaque is allowed to deposit, it will become tartar that cannot be removed just by brushing and flossing. Over time, this tartar build-up can trigger gingivitis.
As a first aid, swollen gum can be treated with natural remedies. Some natural remedies may include nothing more than a single ingredient like salt or lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) just as below.
Prepare two lemon grasses. Slice off the very bottom of the stalk, and peel off any dried-out layers. Then wash and bash the woody part with a rolling pin to soften, and help release some of the aromatic oils. Put the lemon grasses in a pot along with two glasses of water. Bring to boil. Simmer until the water is reduced to ½ glasses. Let the temperature to cool down. Strain and use this decoction for gargling at least twice a day regularly.
Lemon grass, apparently, contains essential oils that are beneficial as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, to soothe pain, and promote blood circulation. Therefore, gargling with lemongrass water is most likely to be effective in treating swollen gum by decreasing pain and reducing inflammation.
If the pain persists or worsens along with discoloration of the gum line and teeth, seek medical assistance immediately. Mind to treat swollen gum. Untreated swollen gum may lead to tooth loss.
