Black Cumin: The Cure-All


black cuminWhat first comes to mind if anyone asks about black cumin? Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is generally known as a seed that is commonly used as spice in lamb dishes.

Black cumin has indeed been used as culinary spice from way back. It has been known by human being since 3,400 years ago. It has been cultivated during the time of Moses—the prophet—in Egypt.

In the New Testament which was brought by Jesus, black cumin is recorded as a popular spice. Throughout the time of Jesus, black cumin was valued as one of the spices used for tribute to God.

In recent years, black cumin has become popular as a natural remedy for many diseases due to its thymoquinone content. As reported by Al Jassir MS, researcher from Saudi Arabia and Basir FA from the US, the active compounds found in black cumin are thymoquinone, nigellone, and solid oil.

Black cumin seed has also been reported to contain more than 100 kinds of valuable nutrition, innumerable therapeutic and other health benefits. Black seed is recorded in the ayurvedic book—the Hindu book of medicine—which is surmised to have come from 3,100 BC or 5,110 years ago as kalonji. In India, kalonji is used as spice and is believed to have antibiotic and antitumor properties. It is not surprising that black cumin is dubbed as the oldest medicine in human civilization.

The benefits of black cumin is also recorded in the book of hadith collected by Bukhari and Muslim—the most prominent book of hadith, i.e. a collection of the sayings, acts or tacit approvals or disapprovals ascribed either validly or invalidly to the prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—as cure for every disease except death.
